Introduction to Human Factors

Human Factors is a scientific discipline that examines human capabilities, limitations, and interactions with systems, tools, and environments. In aviation, it focuses on optimising the relationship between people and the complex systems they operate. The core principle of Human Factors is that errors are not simply individual failures but are often symptoms of deeper systemic issues. Rather than asking "Who made the mistake?", Human Factors asks "What factors in the system contributed to the error?" Key concepts include cognitive workload management, situational awareness, decision-making under pressure, and effective team communication. Each of these plays a critical role in maintaining safety in complex aviation operations.

The Evolution of Human Factors in Aviation

Aviation Human Factors emerged as a formal discipline following several major accidents in the 1970s. The 1977 Tenerife airport disaster, where miscommunication between cockpit and air traffic control led to two Boeing 747s colliding, was a watershed moment. This tragedy led to: - Development of Crew Resource Management (CRM) training - Standardised communication protocols - Deeper understanding of how hierarchy, fatigue, and cultural factors influence safety-critical decisions Today, Human Factors is integrated into every aspect of aviation: cockpit design, maintenance procedures, air traffic control, and safety management systems.

The SHELL Model

The SHELL Model (Software, Hardware, Environment, Liveware, Liveware) provides a framework for understanding Human Factors interactions: - Software: Procedures, checklists, manuals, computer programs - Hardware: Equipment, tools, aircraft design, controls - Environment: Physical conditions, lighting, noise, temperature, pressure - Liveware (People): The human element — skills, knowledge, attitudes - Liveware-Liveware: Interactions between people — communication, teamwork, leadership Mismatches between these components are where errors occur. The goal of Human Factors is to identify and reduce these mismatches.
