Humans Powerful but Imperfect

Human beings are remarkably capable. We can learn complex procedures, make rapid decisions, and adapt to novel situations — abilities no machine has fully replicated. However, we also have inherent limitations. The human brain is not designed for sustained, perfect performance. It works best when tasks are varied, engaging, and within our capacity. When demands exceed our capabilities, performance degrades. Key limitations include: - Limited attention capacity — we can only focus on a few things at once - Limited working memory — we can hold only 5-9 items simultaneously - Susceptibility to fatigue — mental and physical performance declines over time - Stress effects — moderate stress enhances performance, but excessive stress impairs it Understanding and respecting these limitations is the first step in managing them effectively.

Attention and Memory Limitations

Attention is the cognitive process of selectively concentrating on one aspect of the environment while ignoring others. In aviation, attention is a precious resource that must be allocated carefully. Types of attention: - Focused attention: Concentrating on a single task - Divided attention: Managing multiple tasks simultaneously - Selective attention: Filtering relevant information from noise - Sustained attention: Maintaining focus over long periods Memory operates in three stages: 1. Sensory memory: Brief, fleeting impressions (seconds) 2. Short-term/working memory: Active processing (15-30 seconds, 5-9 items) 3. Long-term memory: Permanent storage of knowledge and experience Errors occur when we exceed our memory capacity or misdirect our attention. Forgetting to complete a checklist item, misreading an instrument, or missing a critical call are common examples.

Workload, Stress, and Performance

The relationship between workload, stress, and performance follows the Yerkes-Dodson Law: performance improves with increasing arousal/stress up to an optimal point, after which it declines sharply. Low workload (underload) can be as dangerous as high workload (overload). Underload leads to boredom, complacency, and reduced vigilance. Overload leads to task shedding, errors, and missed information. Factors affecting workload: - Task complexity and time pressure - Environmental conditions (noise, turbulence, temperature) - Personal factors (fatigue, illness, life stress) - Experience and proficiency levels Managing workload involves: - Prioritising tasks effectively - Using automation appropriately - Delegating tasks to team members - Taking breaks when possible - Speaking up when overloaded

Managing Human Limitations

Effective aviation professionals develop strategies to manage their limitations: 1. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Following established procedures reduces reliance on memory and judgement. 2. Checklists: A systematic way to verify critical items without relying on memory. 3. Cross-checking: Having another person verify your actions and decisions. 4. Time management: Building buffers and planning ahead to reduce time pressure. 5. Self-awareness: Recognising when you are fatigued, stressed, or overloaded and taking appropriate action. 6. Automation management: Understanding when to use automation and when to take manual control. The key is not to eliminate human limitations — that is impossible — but to build systems and practices that accommodate them.
